:: A Tomato Trilogy
September 10, 2003

Extracted from the limited edition Tomato Guide, a modest $3 at the recent Tomato Festival:

  1. Black Krim
    The strangest looking tomato of them all. Dark red, almost brown on top, dark and very juicy inside. But when you eat it, surprise — a rich, sweet almost smoky flavour! These remarkable fruits are 3-4” in diameter, soft and thin-skinned on vigorous plants. As delicious as it is beautiful. Robust, spicy flavour with a bit of saltiness. It does tend to crack some but once you taste them you won’t care! Hails from the island of Krim, in the Black Sea of Russia. Similar to, but larger than, Cherokee Purple. Excellent taste. RARE.
  2. Cherokee Purple
    Large fruit. Cherokee Purple is an heirloom possibly over 100 years old and was said to be grown by the Cherokee Indians. It bears up to 12 ounce fruits with a dusky rose colouring with purple undertones and green shoulders. It is sweet, with a rich somewhat smokey taste. These are credited with starting the dark tomato craze. With their sweet and rich flavour, it’s no wonder they’re a hit! The best-tasting of the so-called black tomatoes; sweet and musky, with a rich hint of sin.
  3. Eva Purple Ball
    6-8 ounce pink/purple globes which tend to drop from vine when ripe. Juicy, sweet, delicious, and unique. There are those who say this is the most beautiful tomato of all.

The last of these could easily become another Grail…
